June 22-27 is National Pollinator Week, highlighting the importance of bees
and other pollinators in our ecosystems and in agriculture. Pollinators need the
attention. They have been declining due to parasites, diseases and a mysterious
colony collapse disorder. NRCS in California has been working with private
groups and farmers to help native pollinators augment the "labor forces" more
traditionally occupied by their domesticated cousins. |

It was standing room only at a recent workshop in Fresno to explain a new Farm Bill program for improving air
quality. The program can help farmers replace old combustion engines in tractors, harvesters, pumps and other
off-road agricultural equipment with new engines that reduce emissions as much as 75%. The NRCS program provides about a 50% cost share, and in much of the San Joaquin Valley
the regional Air Pollution Control District is offering an additional 30% to qualified applicants. Workshops are
continuing through June 16th. The application deadline for fiscal year 2009 is June 26.
